Saying Goodbye and Gathering Inspiration - 1/11/23

It was time for the whole family to gather at Arlington National Cemetery for Dad’s interment. Covid had taken him from us at age 97 a couple years prior. I had never been to Arlington, though I had visited Washington, D.C. several times. It felt like sacred ground and we were all thankful the weather cooperated so we could explore the park and learn some of the history of the place.

Dad’s grave site. The marble stone would be carved and added at a later date.

The soldiers, horse drawn coffin, the marching band…we walked behind silently.

The National Gallery lobby.

After saying goodbye to Dad and a family celebration of his life, Kent and I headed off to see the National Gallery. Another first for me, but with only an afternoon before flying home I really wanted to visit there and take in their exhibit of Calder. His giant mobile in the lobby was awe-inspiring! Calder’s use of primary colors and delicate balance was phenomenal! We both enjoyed the more modern art pieces we saw…so inspiring!

Georgia O’Keefe. Need I say more? Just stunning!

Bold lines, bold colors, bold composition! Love, love, love!

Barnett Newman. Powerful and simple. Fantastic!

National Gallery of Art. What a wonderful and inspiring visit! So glad Kent and I could go…I think Dad would have approved.
